Gain Hands-On Training at GTC
One of the many ways that Gwinnett Tech Veterinary Technology students gain hands-on experience also gives them the chance to provide a valuable service to the Gwinnett community.
Gwinnett Tech is not only known for its outstanding academic programs and its custom corporate training services. The college is also well-known for engaging in public service that not only helps the community but also gives students opportunities for interactive learning and real-world experience.
One such program gives Gwinnett Technical College's Veterinary Technology students a taste of caring for animals during the neutering process. Dr. Bonnie Ballard, Gwinnett Technical College program director, partners frequently with the Society of Humane Friends to neuter foster dogs that are waiting to be adopted.
The Society of Humane Friends, based in Duluth, is a non-profit, volunteer organization that rescues stray dogs and cats, and cares for and fosters them until a loving adopted home is found. By dedicating the time and resources to neuter these dogs, Gwinnett Tech is working with local non-profits to lower the number of homeless animals in the county.
During this annual event, students perform all of the tests and procedures that the dogs need before surgery. After the surgeries, students watch over and care for the dogs as they recover. This is often the students' first exposure to anesthesia and surgery involving a live animal. This unique learning opportunity gives students a real-world glimpse of what they will experience when they enter the workforce.
The Gwinnett Tech Veterinary Technology program has had an incredible success record since its inception and has developed the reputation as one of the best programs of its kind in the state. Graduates of the Gwinnett Tech Veterinary Technology program find rewarding careers in small and large veterinary medicine practices and zoos. Graduates also take positions in research, veterinary product sales and development, and in academia.
The Veterinary Technology associate degree program can be completed in two years, attending full-time day classes.
