Get Real-World Skills for the Career You Really Want

Turn over a new leaf with a career in the field of horticulture. Let Gwinnett Tech help you break ground on your new endeavors!

Tired, bored, disinterested. Any one of these is reason enough to want out of a career that just doesn't hold any appeal anymore. Corporate warriors want to get out of the hustle-bustle. Entrepreneurs grow tired of the unknown. It's estimated that the average adult changes careers -- not just jobs -- three or four times in his or her working life.

But with Gwinnett Tech's environmental horticulture program, you'll find not just a job, but a career for life.

Susan Gworek can attest to that. After graduating high school, she took the path expected of her. She went to a four-year college, picked biology as an area of study to pursue, and landed a solid job as a biologist in medical research. She later moved into information technology in healthcare.

But after 20 years in and out of these fields, her interests changed and she thought of leaving her day job.

She finally decided to act on the one, long-held interest that had become her passion -- gardening.

Gworek enrolled in Gwinnett Tech, earned an associate's degree in horticulture and a certification in landscape design, and started her own business - Garden Wonders, Inc. "Here I was leaving this nice, high-paying job to go and try to do this on my own," Gworek said.

Within months of registering on a referral website that rates businesses, Gworek took a call that would set the landscape for her business. After hours and hours of preparation and presentations, Gworek landed the client -- a neighbor of the Governor's -- who gave her $60,000 as a deposit for the more than six-figure project.

"The business skills I have from my previous careers have really helped me with my day-to-day operations," Gworek said. "That, combined with the practical aspects and hands-on training that I gained at Gwinnett Tech have given me the basic knowledge with which to start my own business. I love what I do -- and it shows. I don't miss corporate America at all."
