Gwinnett Technical College Awarded GDOT GATEway Grant to Enhance Portion of SR 316
GTC will plant more than 1,000 trees, shrubs and grasses
GWINNET – NORTH FULTON
Gwinnett Technical College has been awarded a $50,000 GATEway Grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation to beautify a portion of State Road 316 adjacent to the Gwinnett Tech campus.
The project focuses on a narrow stretch of right-of-way that runs parallel to Gwinnett Tech’s Life Sciences Center, a silver LEED certified building.
"With this grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation, we will be able to enhance this very visible area adjacent to our campus, providing year-round beauty to the landscape," said Perry Roberts, executive director of Institutional Development for Gwinnett Tech.
"The planting plan includes a substantial amount of native material that should provide a great deal of visual interest along that stretch of Highway 316 that we have taken under our maintenance wing since the college opened in 1984," said Gail Zorn, Gwinnett Tech grounds manager. "The plan includes a combination of over 1,000 trees, shrubs and grasses."
The selected plants include large hardwood canopy trees and smaller stature trees chosen specifically for their adaptability to the cultural conditions of the project site. The selections include native magnolia, yellowwood and persimmon with mass groupings of durable native or adapted shrubs and groundcover. Selections were chosen specifically for flowering, fruiting, beautiful fall color and long term visual and seasonal interest.
Zorn says the project will begin this fall and the college hopes to make a portion of the tree planting a project for its Great Day of Service event this October.
The GATEway Grant program uses revenue collected from permit fees for vegetation removal in front of outdoor advertising signs. Eighty-three applications were submitted, and GDOT hopes to award additional grants to other worthy projects soon.
In all, Gwinnett Tech offers more than 50 degree, diploma and certificate options that can be completed in two years or less. For more information, visit www.GwinnettTech.edu or call 770-962-7580.
