The HIT certificate has recently been approved to add as a second major, and the online format of the program makes it easy to combine with an existing course load.
Health information technology professionals are responsible for organizing and managing health information data and its secure exchange between all users. They also need to be able to discuss patient information and discrepancies with other professionals, such as physicians and insurance personnel. A fast-growing field, HIT is increasingly viewed as the most promising tool for improving the overall quality, safety and efficiency of the health delivery system.
Health care has been steadily moving towards electronic medical records as a means for improving the overall quality, safety and delivery of its services. Health information technology professionals are needed to implement, organize and manage health information data systems and to train the practitioners who use them.
HIT added 2,000 jobs in Georgia during the recession and slow recovery (2008-2013). The Technology Association of Georgia projects another 1000 new positions in 2014-2015. Nationally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 22 percent job growth for the industry through 2022.
The program is particularly suited for anyone with previous health care or information technology experience. Students will take courses such as History of Health Information Technology, Health Management Information Systems, Quality Improvement and Leadership for Health IT in order to work in the areas of workflow designing, consulting, supporting, managing and training people to use health information technology systems.
Ideal candidates are "people who enjoy change, can learn quickly and are excited about bringing their IT or medical experience to a different kind of environment, while still making a tremendous difference in the lives of people," says Victoria Albee, program director.
