Gwinnett Tech Surgical Technology Students Ace Credentialing Exam
Newest CSTs post program's highest scores ever
Gwinnett Tech's graduating class of surgical technologists have continued the program's long-running record of 100 percent pass rates on the Certified Surgical Technologist exam – and have raised the bar further by earning the program's highest scores ever on the exam.
The "perfect" performance of the 12 graduating seniors extends the 100 percent pass rate to four years at Gwinnett Tech. The test assesses practical knowledge and skills in the field and awards the credential of CST (Certified Surgical Technologist).
"Our students have always been high-performers on the exam and our pass rate is an important hallmark of our program. This year's graduates exceeded that standard with four scoring in the 90th percentile," said T.C. Parker, program director.
"We're proud of students and exemplary work they will do for their employers and patients, and equally proud of the outstanding instructors who prepared them for success," said Parker, recognizing faculty members Glenda McCloskey and Jim Rafferty, plus adjunct instructors Erin Baggett and Shelley Walker.
Gwinnett Tech's surgical technology students continually score above the national average on the CST examination, with the college's pass rate among first-time exam takers consistently at 90-percent or higher.
Graduates obtaining national certification as a CST demonstrate understanding of the basic competencies for safe patient care in the operating room. The CST is recognized in the healthcare community as the foremost credential for surgical technologists in the nation. In addition, it is required for employment within most local, state and national healthcare organizations.
The CST exam is the only fully accredited assessment by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies for surgical technologists in the nation. NCCA accreditation assures that the CST exam meets stringent standards of examination development and administration. Certification as a surgical technologist reflects mastery of surgical competencies and an ongoing commitment to quality patient care.
Gwinnett Tech offers an associate of applied science degree in Surgical Technology. Course work for the Surgical Technology program also satisfies the prerequisites for Gwinnett Tech's associate degree in nursing, for students wishing to make that transition.
In all, Gwinnett Tech offers more than 50 degree, diploma and certificate options that can be completed in two years or less. For more information, visit www.GwinnettTech.edu or call 770-962-7580.
