Gwinnett Tech & Southern Polytechnic State University Partner on Bioscience Education
GTC Graduates Now Have 'Seamless Transition' to SPSU
Gwinnett Technical College's Bioscience program recently formed a partnership with Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) in Marietta, providing a seamless transition for Gwinnett Tech's Bioscience Technology graduates to complete the university's bachelor degree program in Biotechnology.
"Both schools place an emphasis on workforce development, so we're very much looking forward to this new partnership and our students are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to complete their Bioscience education at SPSU," says Dr. Cathy Scholz, Dean of Life Sciences for Gwinnett Tech.
The partnership, referred to as the 2 + 2 Agreement, is the first for Gwinnett Tech's Bioscience program. The agreement allows Gwinnett Tech students with an associate degree in Bioscience Technology to transfer all of their coursework to SPSU and complete a Bachelor of Applied Science in Biotechnology at the university in two additional years.
Bioscience encompasses many critical areas of research on living organisms including development of drugs and medical devices, criminal forensics, environmental science and agricultural biotechnology.
Georgia's bioscience and life sciences sector is one the state's fastest growing, with strong job demand anticipated for the future. Currently, Georgia is home to more than 360 life sciences companies, most of them focused on healthcare applications, ranging from established to start-up pharmaceutical biotechnology, medical device, diagnostic, medical supply and medical informatics companies; and contract laboratory, preclinical and clinical research organizations.
Gwinnett Tech's Bioscience Technology associate degree prepares graduates to perform a number of biotechnology-related careers, including laboratory research, and provides the skills to work in sophisticated biotechnology manufacturing settings.
The bachelor's degree in Biotechnology teaches students advanced laboratory skills concerning how to manipulate, modify, and create biological products. Students earning this degree will be able to enter the workforce as highly skilled laboratory technicians in fields such as medical research, drug discovery, agricultural biotechnology, and forensic science, among many others.
Transferring students from Gwinnett Tech can enter the university's program during any semester – fall, spring or summer.
Along with the associate degree in Bioscience Technology, Gwinnett Tech also offers certificates for Bioscience Environmental Laboratory Technologist, Bioscience Regulatory Assurance Technologist, and Clinical Research Professional.
In all, Gwinnett Tech offers more than 50 degree, diploma and certificate options that can be completed in two years or less. For more information, visit www.GwinnettTech.edu or call 770-962-7580.
