Gwinnett Tech Faculty Member Wins 2012 Friend of Tourism Award
Dr. Mark Newton, Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management program director, and two GTC graduates are honored by the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau
Dr. Mark Newton, program director of the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management program at Gwinnett Technical College, has been honored by the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau as a 2012 Friend of Tourism.
Newton was among five hospitality professionals honored with the designation at the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau's (GCVB) Annual Tourism Awards last week.
"Gwinnett Tech has always enjoyed a terrific partnership with the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau. The GCVB is greatly supportive of our efforts to educate and train hospitality professionals at Gwinnett Tech and embrace our students through the GCVB's development opportunities," said Dr. Newton. "I'm honored by the award and especially proud that two of my former students were also recipients."
Newton was joined in the winner's circle by two of his former students. GTC alumni Candace Kirkpatrick, Catering Sales Executive, Proof of the Pudding, and Ed Peterson, Director of Sales, Wyndham Garden Duluth, were also winners of the Friends of Tourism Award.
"It is important to recognize those who have gone above and beyond in helping to bring in meetings, events and visitors," said Lisa Anders, GCVB Executive Director. "These individuals each do their part in making visitors want to return to Gwinnett again and again. This year's winners truly exemplify the word 'hospitality'."
Newton, a graduate of Cornell University, has been with Gwinnett Tech since 1987. He received his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Georgia.
Gwinnett Tech offers an associate degree and diploma in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management, plus certificates for Event Coordinator, Food and Beverage Director, Hotel Management Specialist and for Travel Agency Operations.
In all, GTC offers more than 45 degree, diploma and certificate student options that students can finish in two years or less. For more information, visit www.GwinnettTech.edu or call 770-962-7580.
