Gwinnett Tech GED Program Merits National Attention
Pre-Ged Program Chosen for Federal Study; Chief Examiner Will Participate on National Marketing Team

The faculty and staff of Gwinnett Technical College's GED program are participating in two national initiatives designed to ultimately strengthen the effectiveness of adult education.
GTC's Pre-GED program has been selected to participate in the Strengthening Adult Reading Instructional Practices (SARIP) study, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The study will focus on the effectiveness of the program's Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) adult reading program. The study examines the types of reading instructional methods and reading content that are being used in classes taught by STAR-trained instructors and the reading outcomes of adult learners who participate in these classes.
GTC's Pre-GED program was selected based on factors such as the size and duration of the reading classes, the diagnostic assessments used in the classes, and the reading components that are taught in the classes. The study will begin this fall.
Additionally, Justine Lynch, Chief GED Examiner at Gwinnett Tech, has been chosen to participate on the marketing team for the upcoming release of the newest GED Tests, planned for 2012.
GED Tests were first given in 1942 to those in the military or veterans who had not graduated high school but instead served our country. By 1974, citizens of all states could take the GED Tests in order to achieve a General Education Development Diploma. Since that time, over 17 million people have earned a GED credential.
In 2012, the American Council on Education will be releasing the fifth series of the GED tests. In preparation for this release, the American Council on Education created a marketing team in Arizona and Georgia to assist in creating a new and innovative way to market this new test to the country. Lynch has been chosen for the team to increase the awareness of Georgia's GED testing program.
