Advisors to Put You on the Right Track
Gwinnett Tech advisors provide evaluation and guidance to help you explore and choose program options, class selection and scheduling, and career and educational goals. Students are assigned an advisor after being accepted into a program of study. You should meet with your advisor prior to each quarterly registration to discuss your plans and progress towards graduation. Keep in mind that it is your overall responsibility to meet all graduation requirements, but advisors are here to assist you in your academic planning.

Umber Hanief
Program Director, English and Reading Learning Support

Umber Hanief joined Gwinnett Tech in 2002 as an English instructor and became Program Director for English and Reading Support in 2006.
Her prior industry experience includes teaching English as a second language, managing the University of Alabama in Huntsville's Writing Center and teaching middle school history classes
Sarah Justin Jerome
Program Director, Psychology

Sarah Justin Jerome joined Gwinnett Tech in 1987 teaching computer programming and accounting and also co-directed a kids' computer camp at the college for three years. In 1991, she began teaching psychology full-time and currently teaches introductory psychology and abnormal psychology.
Her education includes a B.A. in psychology from West Georgia University; a M.Ed. from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; and an Ed.S. from the University of Georgia.
Prior to her work with Gwinnett Tech, she served as a counselor in mental health and as a computer programmer/systems analyst.
Jerome and her husband live in Lawrenceville. They have one daughter. Jerome enjoys water sports and traveling.
Janet L. Lindenfeld
Program Director, Speech

Janet L. Lindenfeld joined Gwinnett Tech in 1988 as an adjunct instructor for English and speech. She was hired as a full time speech instructor in 1997. Lindenfeld was a member of the 2002 Teachers As Leaders class. She served as Division Director for Arts and Sciences from 2001-2005. Currently, she is the program director for speech.
Lindenfeld has been in education for 35 years. She began her teaching career in Michigan where she taught English, theatre and speech. She moved to Georgia in 1983 and was employed by Gwinnett County Public Schools. She has taught at both Berkmar High School and Brookwood High School. In addition to teaching English, she helped to develop the theatre arts program in both schools.
She attended Michigan State University where she was awarded a B.A. in Communication Arts, and the University of Michigan where she was awarded an M.A. in Speech Education.
Lindenfeld resides in Duluth. In her spare time, she enjoys performing and directing with various community and civic theatres, travel, baking and going to films. She supports several charities, but her favorites are Relay for Life, Doctors Without Borders, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Children's Miracle Network, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a hospice for cancer patients.
The speech program at Gwinnett Tech has grown dramatically over the past 10 years, and a speech textbook developed by Lindenfeld and adjunct speech instructor Penny Waddell, reflects the academic needs of Gwinnett Tech students and the increasing demands of the business world.
Dr. Victoria Seals

Dr. Victoria Seals joined Gwinnett Tech in 2005 as an instructor for mathematics. She has served as Division Director for Arts and Sciences since January 2007.
Dr. Seals began her teaching career in Athens, GA. She was employed by Athens-Clarke County Public Schools for two years and Athens Technical College for six years. During her time in Athens, Dr. Seals also served as an assistant basketball coach for the Clarke Central High School girl's basketball program and as a tutor/proctor for the University of Georgia Athletic Department.
She attended Spelman College where she was awarded a B.S. in mathematics, and the University of Georgia where she was awarded an M.A. in mathematics, an Ed.S. in mathematics education, and an Ed.D. in educational leadership.
Dr. Seals resides in Lawrenceville. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling and watching sports. She supports several charities, but her favorites are Relay for Life, the United Negro College Fund, and the United Way.
Robert Seibert
Economics Instructor

Robert Seibert joined Gwinnett Tech in 1984 as electromechanical instructor.
His prior industry experience includes roles as a field service engineer and as an electrical maintenance engineer with leading industry employers.
Seibert holds a B.S in Electrical Engineering Technology from Southern Polytechnic State University; an MBA from Georgia State University; and an Education Specialist certificate from Georgia State University.
Marcia Shams
Program Director, Humanities

Dr. Marcia Shams has been a full-time faculty member at GTC for six years. She first joined Gwinnett Tech in 2002 as an English instructor and is presently program director for humanities.
Her educational background includes studies in English, science and philosophy. She completed her undergraduate and master's studies at Florida State University. Shams began doctorial studies in biological sciences at University of Georgia, but decided to change her doctoral pursuits to English at Georgia State University.
She was born and raised in northwest Florida but has lived in a number of states and cities. She has traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. Shams moved to the Metro Atlanta area to pursue her doctoral studies. She has lived in the area for the last 22 years.
Shams work background includes extensive teaching and administrative work, including teaching science and English in Georgia and Florida public and private middle and high schools before coming to Gwinnett Tech. Dr. Shams enjoys painting, writing, traveling, and being with her family, friends and dog.
